Olfactif sent me this subscription box for my review.

I was so excited to get the November Olfactif box because I had never ever seen a review of it! Olfactif works like this: get 3 samples in your box, each containing 15-20 “wears” of an independently designed perfume. With every box, your account will be credited with an $18 voucher to use on fragrances from the store. Olfactif‘s focus is on niche fragrance, so you’ll see different & unique scents, higher quality and hard-to-find ingredients, and is an art form all into itself! I was surprised at how the fragrances developed on my body (and remember every body is different!). Both my grandmother and myself have body chemistry that seems to really amp up some parts of fragrances and some parts I never even smell. For example, I hate the regular scent of patchouli, but if I put it on my body (like in Angel), it smells totally different!

I don’t consider myself a fan of most mainstream fragrances (though I love sweet vanilla-y scents, I don’t typically buy those in a perfume because I can just spray some on with a body spray) so I was super excited to test out this box! And I was so excited about the box I made a video of it, even though I look terrible today!

The Subscription: Olfactif
The Description: Get 3 niche, unique fragrances curated around a theme. Purchase a full bottle that month and credit your box price against the cost of the fragrance.
The Price: $18/month

November 2013 Olfactif Leather

This box arrived in an outer bubble envelope, along with some press information.

When you open the box this information card tells you just how Olfactif works!

And here’s the box itself! This is the most unique packaging I’ve ever seen in a subscription box! Even though these are samples the packaging befits these little luxury goods!

You pull on the ribbon to slide out the drawer and at the same time the bottom half of the cover slides back! Brilliant! I made a video of it, linked below!

The information card for the month’s theme covers up the little vials

I totally missed the back side of this information card, which tells the story of each fragrance inside. The back gives the name, perfumer, and notes for each sample. It also notes that the Ashoka sample is smaller because of the ingredients it contains (totally worth it!)

My preciouses!

Dzing! – L’Artisan Parfumeur This strongly leathery scent is made to evoke the feeling of the Circus! It evolved into an extremely wearable scent.

Dzing! Notes white iris, ginger, white cedarwood, toffee, daffodil, patchouli, saffron, benzoin, musks, leather.

Ashoka – Neela Vermeire Créations This fragrance tells the story of the emperor Ashoka. Frankly, it surprised the hell out of me. At first it was a very pleasant green kind of scent, and crescendoed in this crazy strong sort of way, and died down into all the ambery notes it contains.

Ashoka – Notes lotus, rose, water hyacinth, fig leaf, parsley leaf, osmanthus, cassie, iris, incense, jasmine sambac, fig milk, geranium, ylang-ylang, fir balsam, myrrh, cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, ambergris, birch, Haitian vetiver, leather, styrax, heliotrope.

Cuirelle – Ramon Monegal This was the first one I grabbed and it’s meant to be the suede side – smoky and sweet!

Cuirelle Notes Somali incense, Indonesian patchouli, bourbon vetiver, Virginian cedarwood, cinnamon, and beehive absolute

I think Olfactif is a great box and I loved it! It’s unique and a great way to discover perfumes that I promise you will never find in the store! I did make a crazy video of this box, including a reading suggestion for it, as well as a movie selection!

Please forgive me for looking atrocious in the video! It was a hectic day and it was definitely a no makeup sort of morning!
